“The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom ALL THAT CAUSES SIN and all who do evil.” (Mt 13:41) How was this fulfilled in A.D. 70? First, notice that “CAUSES” is PLURAL. In other words, there is MORE THAN ONE cause of sin.
The FIRST cause of sin that was destroyed in A.D. 70 is the LAW: “For the law brings wrath, but where there is NO LAW there is NO SIN.” (Romans 4:15) The Law passed in A.D. 70 when the Temple was destroyed. Without a Temple it was no longer possible to follow many aspects of the Law. This means that the WHOLE LAW must have passed at that time according to Mt 5:18: “[N]ot the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.”
The SECOND cause of sin that was destroyed in A.D. 70 is mentioned in 1 Tim 6:10: “For the love of money is the root of all [Israel’s] evil.” Israel was punished at the end of the age because she killed Jesus and the saints (Col 3:5-6; Rev 6:9-11; 8:1-6; 17:5). But EXACTLY which JEWS of Jerusalem killed Jesus and the saints? Jm 5:1-6, Lk 11:39 and Lk 16:13-15 answer this question: “Now listen, you RICH people ….YOU have condemned and murdered the innocent one [Christ], who was not opposing you.” (Jm 5:1-6) The RICH ALSO persecuted the saints. (Jm 2:1-7) Why did RICH JEWS do this?
Israel was a province of Roman so if Jerusalem crowned Jesus sovereign king of the Jews (as the Messiah was expected to be) this would incite a war with Rome. Any war naturally results in pillaging and destruction of property in addition to risking the Temple’s destruction. Jerusalem’s whole economy was based on the Temple so this is how the rich made their money. Thus the rich who stood to lose EVERYTHING if Jesus became king of the Jews (Mt 20:16):
“Then the chief priests and Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. “What are we doing?” “This man is performing many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, AND THEN THE ROMANS WILL COME AND TAKE AWAY BOTH OUR TEMPLE (by destroying it) AND OUR NATION (by war).” Then Caiaphas who was high priest spoke up, “You know nothing at all! You do not realize that IT IS BETTER FOR YOU (because they rich) THAT ONE MAN DIE THAN THAT THE WHOLE NATION PERISH (by war).” (Jn 11:47-50)
This is why the rich did not want Jesus to be king (Mt 2:1-3, Lk 19:27) and “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for the RICH to enter the kingdom of God.” (Mt 19:24) 1 Ti 6:10 says, “The love of MONEY is the root of ALL EVIL” as it was GREED that led to the RICH killing Jesus and the saints and it was for this crime of murder that Israel was punished in Revelation. (Rev 6:9-11; 8:1-6; 17:5).
THUS ACCORDING TO ROMANS 4:15 AND 1 TIM 6:10 THE LAW AND THE LOVE OF MONEY WAS THE ROOT OF ALL FIRST-CENTURY ISRAEL’S SIN! When the Romans destroyed the Temple not only did this act fulfill the Law, it also cut off the source of Israel’s money problem since the rich made their money off the Temple economy. Therefore when the Temple was destroyed all the BIBLICAL causes of Israel’s sin laid out in 1 Tim 6:10 and Romans 4:15 were removed!
